VentSummary Caught up in an atmosphere of sexual tension, paranoia and political correctness, Vent follows the lives of four students and their tutors who become entangled in the fallout of an accusation of date-rape. Set on campus in that last refuge of the sexes - adjoining toilets - Vent examines the breakdown in communication between genders and the complex ritualisation of contemporary sexual politics. Exhilirating and moving, Vent is a brilliantly observed production, full of razor-sharp dialogue. Brought to you by the ground-breaking LeKoa, Vent is the snappiest, most exciting
piece of new writing you will see this year. “The world premiere of this new work may only last 90 minutes but the result is a fascinating piece...Christopher Wright has
chosen his committed cast wisely” |

VentProgramme NotesVent began life as a debate amongst members of the company about ownership of language: who can say what, who cannot, and in what context. Whilst threads of this theme remain, the resulting play has taken on a whole different identity.
Vent is set on a fictional university campus intoxicated with political correctness and burdened with rules and regulations to protect the individual from themselves and others. As with all of LeKoa’s work, it is about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. I was intrigued by the notion of institutions applying hard and fast rules to something that is unpredictable, exciting and dangerous: sex. Vent is about debate; it isn’t about answers. I hope that enough questions are raised in the play that you feel the need to offer your own answers.
I am delighted to welcome five new collaborators to LeKoa as part of our Arts Council-funded Post- Graduate Work Placement Scheme.

We are committed to providing opportunities for new theatre artists in the North West and this scheme is a precursor to The Gymnasium project, a regular resource for actors, writers and directors that will launch in 2007.
All the artists and technicians involved in this production of Vent have very generously waived their fees. I have been humbled and gratified by my colleagues’ commitment to this project and have very much enjoyed working with a fantastic company.
2007 should be a busy year for LeKoa: Vent will tour nationally in autumn; The Gymnasium will launch in spring, and our next play will be developed for production in 2008.
Thank you for coming to see the show – I hope you enjoy it. |
